Plastic butt-welding machine for Plasti Weld
Project description
Acres developed for Plasti Weld a plastic butt-welding machine designed to integrate, in a single solution, the heating zone, support system, worktable, material guiding, and the necessary guards for the process.
The equipment combines metal fabrication, machined parts, PTFE components, mesh guards, guiding systems, and safety elements to create a functional, robust machine tailored to the customer’s actual process.
Customer need
GE Aerospace needed a specific solution to store, protect, and transport technical tooling in an orderly and safe manner within the plant.
The tooling required defined positions, protection during movement, and clear presentation to facilitate use, identification, and control. Due to its geometry and operational value, a standard solution could not properly secure each item or maintain the required level of organisation during day-to-day work.
The main need was to develop a custom industrial trolley combining mobility, structural strength, surface protection, and visual control of each tool.
Solution developed by Acres
The design was conceived as a special-purpose plastic welding machine, adapted to Plasti Weld’s production process and integrated into a main metal structure with a table, rear frame, heater block, and specific guards.
Acres developed the assembly around the machine’s real operation: material positioning, heating, controlled movement, operator protection, and access to the main elements.
To achieve this, PTFE parts were incorporated in contact and guiding areas, a specific heater block, structures fabricated in mild steel, mesh guards, a light curtain, an E-stop, and adjustment elements using shims and packers.
The solution enables safer, more controlled work, reducing improvisation in the process and providing a technical configuration adapted to the plastic butt-welding operation.
Technical specifications of the design
- Main structure in mild steel with SHS, CHS, angle sections, flat bars, and laser-cut parts.
- Worktable and rear frame manufactured with a tubular structure and welded metal components.
- PTFE parts integrated into the heater block, top covers, side panels, bearings, packers, and contact areas.
- Heater block with laser-cut plates, PTFE components, machined shafts, and fastening elements.
- Electrowelded mesh guards/mesh guards to protect the work area.
- Light curtain integrated as a safety system in the operating area.
- E-stop integrated into the assembly for emergency stop.
- Cylinders and cylinder supports integrated for table operation and controlled movement.
- Slotted Unistrut 41 x 41 profiles used in the table configuration.
- Cable trays and an Easy Chain system to organise and guide auxiliary elements.
- Ceramic blanket/fibreglass integrated as thermal protection.
- Rear protection and rear panel with closing and guarding elements.
- BZP fasteners and off-the-shelf components integrated into the assembly.
