Manual Mould Lifter for Rolls-Royce

Project Description

Acres Engineering designed and manufactured a custom manual mould lifter for Rolls-Royce to handle and position moulds in large chill furnaces. The equipment features an SWL of 70 kg, adjustable height, and a clamping system adapted to the aerospace manufacturing process.

Client Need

Rolls-Royce required a mould handling solution that would allow heavy moulds to be manipulated and brought close to the furnace without the operator having to bear the load directly. The equipment had to provide the necessary reach to access the work point, maintain stability during lifting, and secure the mould safely throughout the entire process.

The solution also had to be maneuverable within the production area, allow precise height adjustment, and incorporate a gripping system developed specifically for the mould geometry. Conventional lifting equipment did not offer the combination of reach, adjustment, and clamping system required for this application.

Solution Developed by Acres

Acres developed a mobile lifting and handling unit that allows the mould to be brought close to the furnace, positioned, and released while keeping the operator away from the high-temperature zone. The design combines a long-reach arm with a stable base, enabling the load to be introduced into the work area without the operator having to approach the furnace.

The actuators are located at the rear of the equipment. From that position, the operator can adjust the mould height and open the clamps remotely, maintaining control throughout the operation. The incorporation of a transparent barrier between the furnace and the handling area provides protection from heat without losing visibility of the load.

Thus, the solution enables the process to be carried out in a safer, more controlled, and ergonomic manner, reducing both manual handling of the mould and direct operator exposure to furnace heat.
